Abstract: Snapshots: Woodlawn
My work seeks to reveal the stories of the everyday lifestyle in the Chicago south side neighborhood, Woodlawn. Photographs of the community with major news articles projected over them raise questions as to why Chicago Sun Times, CNN, Chicago Tribune, etc. does not properly represent the people of Woodlawn. Quotes by the community in favor of the photographs interlude the articles. This project advocates for the people who often get missed in a community due to dominant society focusing on their neighborhoods’ crime rate or efforts to rebuild the community. Finally, this project leads viewers to think twice about a neighborhood they only know about from the news.
