Denim Piece / Abstract

Denim Piece is an installation that explores the spaces between fashion, sculpture, and ethics. The installation features a woven tapestry, constructedwith unwanted denim. Over 85 denim garments were donated, stripped, sewn, andwoven. The piece is accompanied with a booklet titled, Denim Zine, that allowsthe audience to learn more about the history and process that informed theinstallation. My hope is that the audience with be able to relate throughtheir own experience with denim and will appreciate the jean’s new life. In thegallery the installation acts as a social critique and sculptural explorationof the garment and its history. Denim Zine ends by introducing ABLE shoppe, the ongoing project that inspired Denim Piece. Furthermore, my desire is thatthe ideas and aesthetics of Denim Piece and ABLE Shoppe will spark a furtherconsideration of secondhand clothing and what sustainability can look like. Atthe conclusion of the show, the denim in the installation will be donated to GoGreen Blue Jeans, where the denim will turned into housing insulation forcommunities in need.
